This is my oil painting that presents some of the highlights of Brigadier General Gerald Goodfellow’s outstanding 30 year U.S. Air Force career. General Goodfellow attained the rating of Master Navigator having served in numerous aircraft including the KC-135, E-6B, and his personal favorite: the B-1B Lancer. Some of his most notable assignments are depicted such as the Pentagon, the Army War College, Randolph Air Force Base, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. His three highest decorations are shown as well as his Distinguished Flying Cross with V device for Valor and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters for completed combat missions. General Goodfellow also received the prestigious Mackay Trophy and the Ira Eaker award for his continuous 36 hour flight around the world in a B1 Bomber.
The sad girl on the right holding a dead bird is a marble sculpture we saw in Charleston SC . The boy on the left is a marble sculpture located in the Met in NYC. I chose to paint this little boy sculpture intending for it to seem that he is trying to cheer up the sad girl. I purposely painted the sculptures to have the same base to help solidify the idea that the paintings are a set. The Greek Parthenon in the middle seemed to fit the scheme of the two Greek children so we hung all three as a set.
Painted around 1650, this work was originally attributed to Rembrandt but recent scholars have changed their view thinking it was painted by either a student or associate of Rembrandt because of stylistic differences in paint application.
This is my painting of a marble sculpture I saw in a Plantation home in Charleston, SC. When I first saw it I was immediately affected by her sad expression as she gazes at the dead bird in her right hand. I just started on a compliment to this painting which will make a set of two.
This is a recent painting of a figure that has been called Scales of Justice. In Greek mythology Themis was a bringer of balance and righter of wrongs……the embodiment of justice, right, and custom. This was the basis for the female figure that holds the scales while stepping on a serpent and wielding a sword, a symbol of power. I decided to give it to my niece Christina who is a paralegal and in addition, one of her sons is a lawyer.
This painting is based upon a special project reported on some time ago by a national tv network about Mongolians who hunt small game with golden eagles. The Mongolian bonds with a particular eagle and they work together hunting small game……sometimes for years. At some point though, the Mongolian will release the eagle back into the wilds to allow the bird to mate and produce offspring. This painting was a fill-in project that I worked on in between commissions and it took me over two years to complete.
This is my copy of Claude Monet’s “Bridge Over a Pool of Water Lilies“
originally painted in the year 1900. I painted this for Granddaughter Farrah’s
bedroom. Her mom and I decided on this painting because Farrah’s middle name is Lily.
This is my painting of a wild partridge that my nephew John Pitera named “Kevin” ……John regularly feeds him near his summer camp in Booneville, NY. I wondered how he came to be feeding the wild bird. John told me the following story:
“ In August 2018 I was picking raspberries; I looked over and a bird was starring at me…….of course I threw him the raspberries, and the relationship began from there….Kevin has made it through two winters now and hangs around in the same area where we met…….that’s why he is still alive…..I feed him to keep him healthy……so far so good this year” (2020).
Johns story touched me so I decided to paint Kevin for him.
This painting depicts some of my son’s momentos from his graduation from Houston Community College and the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Fraternity. Items include a medal, chords, sash, and graduation tassel.
The lit candle represents education and knowledge. The painting won third place at the Lone Star Art Guild annual district convention.
The stein I used for this painting I purchased after seeing it in a store when I was a boy. I used money from my paper route to pay for it……about $5.00 as I recall.
I have always loved the detailed paintings of William Harnett that include instruments, sheet music, books etc. I purchased a piccolo and used other items I have, as well as my wife’s pearls to stage this setting. I was attempting to achieve the degree of detail Harnett achieved in his paintings.
I painted this as result of souvenirs I purchased while on a trip to the former Soviet Union in 1967. The samovar, matrioshka doll, and podstakan are all depicted.
While on a vacation cruise I saw this painting outside the dining room of the ship. Obviously not an original, I still thought I would like to copy it. Although the wall placard beside the painting claimed it to be a Rembrandt, I was never able to find it in any of the many books I own on Rembrandt. The placard pointed out that Rembrandt was right handed but in this painting he is holding the palate, brushes, and mall stick in his right hand which would indicate that he used his left hand to paint. At any rate I have never been able to find neither the original painting nor any information about it so this painting continues to be a mystery.
This was painted by Childe Hassan during the 1880’s. This copy is an early attempt by me of dusk as the sun begins to set. I had to apply a lot of glazes to get the transparent effect in the sky and snow.
One of my early attempts at portraiture, my Uncle John was one of the most influential people to encourage me to pursue my art work. This portrait was the result of a photo I have that was taken of him during WW2.
This painting was not a result of a real place but an imaginary, fanciful one influenced by the landscapes of the Hudson Vally School of artists. The man with his dog comes upon the castle ruins while on a hike. I chose a large black dog because of Laika, my black lab. It is an early morning scene with mist still rising from the river.
This is my copy of Peter Paul Rubens siege portrait painted in 1638. This copy is one of my earliest attempts at a portrait. I completed it in July 1980.
This is my copy of the original by Thomas Sully painted in 1820. He is the same artist who painted the likeness of Andrew Jackson that appears on the US twenty dollar bill.
My copy of a Vermeer that he painted in 1667. The artist at the easel is said to be Vermeer himself painting from a live model. The map on the wall is of the regions of the Netherlands. Vermeer painted curtains drawn back as if the viewer is looking in on the artist at work.
I completed and presented this painting to my wife Meg on our 8th anniversary, May 20, 1980. It is a still life that was meant to represent a change in our lives as Meg was expecting our first baby who was to be born Sept. 4, 1980. Up to this point Meg worked a secular job but was ready to start a family. We both agreed that the time was right as represented by the balanced scales. Her working life was to come to an end as represented by the closed books….CCA as appears on one book stood for a former employer Continental Credit Adjusters, the next LAW, Credit Bureau of Greater Buffalo, and WT Grant all represent her working career. That was all to come to an end replaced by the book in the close foreground that has in capital letters Otsovstvo which in Russian means Parenthood. So the painting represents our balanced condition that would result in our starting our family. One that would ultimately include three children, two boys and a girl.
I based this painting on an image purported to be a self portrait of Vermeer as it appeared in his painting The Procuress of 1656. I added a copy of his Girl with a Pearl Earring and included tapestries as were common in many of his paintings.
I painted this still life from props I have accumulated through the years. The razor resting on the towel on the lower left belonged to the father of Marcel Carrascosa. Marcel was a former boss and he owns this still life that hangs in his home in Pearland Texas.
Got a call today from Sugar Land Airport and this painting sold today! I briefly spoke with the buyer who said that he is purchasing the painting for his Mom. He said that she already has a painting of a lighthouse on Cape Cod and he said this one will be a perfect companion for it. He was very complimentary saying I did a marvelous job painting it. It sounds like they may have relocated from the Cape and these paintings together will serve as a bit of nostalgia for them. Apparently his Mom is sick and may not be with us much longer……he said that after she passes he will then keep the painting and “treasure it”. Needless to say, I was very pleased and flattered that he liked my painting so well. I told him that my oldest son lives on Martha’s Vineyard and that the painting is based upon a pic I took while there on vacation. He said that he knows the very spot from which I took the photo! He will pay for it by check that he’ll mail to me. It sold for $ 95.00.
This painting was commissioned my friend Rich Robinson. The original was painted by his relative George Richmond in the 1800’s. The top pic is my copy in its frame and the bottom pic shows my copy with a pic of the original. My painting now hangs in Rich’s home on the isle of Jersey in the United Kingdom.
Alan Turing is widely considered the “Father of Computer Science”, and is known for his work decoding Enigma Machine messages sent during World War II.
This still life represents phases of the Arts: music, drama, and art with objects that represent each. It won First Place in a local show of the Sugar Land Area Artists.
This painting was based on a poster I saw in a hobby store. It is the joker as portrayed by Heath Ledger in a Batman movie. The hair was particularly challenging.
A couple months ago I saw a pic of Willie in the newspaper. I cut it out and came up with this painting. I purposely left it in black and white, as was the original.
I was particularly happy with the hair. I was able to get good, sharp detail with the use of an exacto knife that allowed me to carefully scratch in each strand of hair.
I like the black and white look of the painting just like my portrait of Einstein which also was in black and white.
This painting won Best Of Show out of about 200 paintings at a Sugar Land Area Artists Show. The judge who critiqued the painting said the values are excellent, composition very good, and disappearing edges on some of the objects was effective. It is the highest award I have ever received for my artwork. My idea was to indicate where artists can get inspiration. The source of the light (inspiration) is coming from above but not from the candle since it is not lit.
This still life contains some of my actual items I own and use: a coffee mug decanter, bagel with cream cheese, and a bamboo Hadley knife. It won First Place in my division in an annual district show of the Lone Star Art Guild, an organization that included many art clubs comprising about a two hundred mile radius around Houston Texas.
This painting was submitted to a local show at Sugar Land Regional Airport that had the theme: “Anything Texas”. The painting includes Texas pilot’s names, the war they served in, and any significant facts about them or the aircraft. All airplane markings and insignia are accurate based upon actual photos. The painting is owned by, and is on permanent display at, Sugar Land Regional Airport.
